Jeff Bezos Steps Down: What’s Next For Amazon

 

Built from a modest online bookstore, Amazon became the best-known online shopping site in history. Jeff Bezos turned his brainchild into a company with over a million employees and annual sales of $126 billion. As the CEO of Amazon, Bezos has remained its public face and guided the company through occasional failures and immeasurable success. His resignation announcement surprised many and left countless shoppers and others to wonder to expect from a Bezos-free Amazon.

 

Absence Planned Thoroughly

Not just anyone can step easily into the position of CEO at a corporation earning billions. The man selected to take over the job, Andy Jassy, has 24-years of experience with Amazon and was groomed for the position. Bezos has stated his intention to stay involved with the company and to remain as executive chair. The change was not an overnight decision. The company will continue to adapt to changing times and experts believe it will most likely continue with business as usual.

 

Attention May Shift

Bezos spent a lot of time in the spotlight during his role as CEO. How that absence could change Amazon is in question. Not all the attention given to Bezos flattered the company or boosted its reputation. The wages and working conditions of average workers looked regrettable compared to the wealth of the CEO. A somewhat messy divorce and allegations of possible infidelity tainted the company’s reputation.

Jassy, as a lesser-known and slightly less flashy individual, could help to make the focus of the company more on the services and products it offers rather than the CEO’s personality. Of course, in a society obsessed with social media, it is unknown if the lack of a superstar leader could help or harm the corporation.

 

Employees Expect Consistency

Amazon employees doubt that little will change for them. Those who expect the least disruption to their time and pay are employees on the bottom of the corporate ladder. Fulfillment center staff rarely see or hear from anyone in the executive offices. Most doubt that any change will take place in their daily work environment.

 

Amazon has grown and thrived, weathered complaints, and overcome controversy during its many years in existence. It is doubtful a change in CEO will affect a stable company with a successful formula. Amazon continues to dominate nearly all other online retailers and thoroughly overshadow most brick- and mortar stores and will probably continue through the near future.

This is the title of an entertaining and inspiring book by Wayne Aho, who rode his bicycle across the United States on the TransAmerica trail at the age of 74, a distance of about 4200 miles. He was a successful businessman for several decades, then had a second career as a business professor at Western Carolina University. He finally retired completely in 2020 and did the ride with three other friends shortly thereafter. Group Ride In The Country

I rode with my normal Tuesday group yesterday, on a day that started out gray but turned nice and sunny. We went up into the hills West of Morgan Hill, first around Chesbro reservoir, then up Croy road to the County park at the end, around Uvas reservoir, then through the beautiful Sycamore valley back to the start. I had warmed up for an hour before the start, so this ended up being 3 1/2 hours of mostly easy riding for me. Heading up Croy Road, the country road Karen and I lived on for 24 years More Croy Scenery Swanson Creek (which flows into Uvas Creek) going under a bridge at the Park.
