What is the Difference Between a Mac and a PC?

 

A Mac is technically a PC since PC just stands for a personal computer. However, when people talk about Macs versus PCs, what they are really discussing is Apple versus Windows. These two popular brands of computers have many things in common, but they use slightly different software and hardware. To figure out which option is best for them, people need to take into account these key factors.

 

Price and Availability

Windows operating systems and hardware are produced by a variety of companies, including HP, Dell, and Lenovo. Meanwhile, Apple is the only company that produces Macs. This means that it is often easier to find Windows-based PCs in stores. Due to the wider availability, Windows PCs are also more affordable and budget-friendly. This is a good thing for most people, but some desire the exclusivity and brand name appeal of a Mac.

 

Software Options

Over the years, Windows has encouraged a variety of developers to write software for Windows. This makes it easy to find games, apps, and other programs for Windows PCs. Meanwhile, Mac computers are more limited. Most of their software is proprietary software only created and available from Apple. The tighter control on software means Apple software is more reliable, but it has less variety and flexibility.

 

Susceptibility to Malware

Since Windows-based PCs are so widespread, they tend to have a bigger malware problem. Hackers can more easily look at proprietary code, so they can more easily find dangerous exploits. Furthermore, most of them focus on Windows because the higher number of computers available gives their malware a bigger chance of spreading. This does not mean Macs are immune to malware, but it might be slightly less common.

 

Compatibility With Other Devices

A big selling point for Macs is that they are instantly compatible with all other Apple products. If a person has an iPhone, iPad, or other devices, they can share files, documents, and phone calls wirelessly. Compatibility between Windows products can be more hit or miss since they are made by so many developers. Often, a Windows-based PC will be compatible with other products made by the same manufacturer, but it might not be compatible with products from a different company.

This is the title of an entertaining and inspiring book by Wayne Aho, who rode his bicycle across the United States on the TransAmerica trail at the age of 74, a distance of about 4200 miles. He was a successful businessman for several decades, then had a second career as a business professor at Western Carolina University. He finally retired completely in 2020 and did the ride with three other friends shortly thereafter. Group Ride In The Country

I rode with my normal Tuesday group yesterday, on a day that started out gray but turned nice and sunny. We went up into the hills West of Morgan Hill, first around Chesbro reservoir, then up Croy road to the County park at the end, around Uvas reservoir, then through the beautiful Sycamore valley back to the start. I had warmed up for an hour before the start, so this ended up being 3 1/2 hours of mostly easy riding for me. Heading up Croy Road, the country road Karen and I lived on for 24 years More Croy Scenery Swanson Creek (which flows into Uvas Creek) going under a bridge at the Park.
